Step back to 1954, when Mount Sinai’s commitment to knowledge and discovery took root with the founding of the Abraham Jacobi Library—the precursor to today’s Levy Library. This milestone laid the foundation for decades of learning, innovation, and access to critical medical knowledge.
As we celebrate #LevyLibrary50, we’re also proud to recognize National Library Week—a time to honor the transformative role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in our communities.
Interestingly, 1954 was also the year the National Book Committee was formed to inspire a culture of reading in America, leading to the first-ever National Library Week just a few years later in 1958.
This shared legacy of promoting literacy, discovery, and lifelong learning is deeply embedded in our roots—and still drives us forward today.
