Across the Mount Sinai Health System more than 10 million food transactions take place annually. We are committed to preparing, serving, and managing this vast amount of food in the healthiest and most sustainable way possible. We have signed on to the Cool Food Pledge, committing our health system to a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from our food purchases by 2030. With this pledge, we working to promote plant-forward menu options for our patients and staff.
In addition, we are expanding our efforts in all to of the following areas:
- Purchasing sustainable and local food
- Reducing the amount of carbon intensive foods we serve without sacrificing taste
- Limiting sugar-sweetened beverages
- Composting food scraps
- Replacing Styrofoam and conventional plastics with compostable and biodegradable materials
- Reducing the use of straws
Reducing Food Waste
We have implemented an aggressive inventory management program to prevent food waste from the start. Each year, we participate in Stop Food Waste Day, where our chefs prepare a delicious meal for our retail spaces while generating zero food waste.
