Message from the Chair
Among the medical community, the Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology at Mount Sinai is known as one of the nation’s and the world’s leading dermatology departments. We have taken a bedside to bench approach that resulted in identification of the causes of many skin conditions, leading to new treatments. This contributed to the development of better, more effective and safer therapies in skin cancer, psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and many other dermatologic diseases, for which we are known for.
We’re being recognized by many as the best and largest eczema center worldwide, based on number on eczema patients, clinical trials and new research developments that are responsible for many new treatments, as well as one of the best psoriasis centers. We also have one of the best centers for hair disorders such as alopecia areata, and scarring alopecia, where we have identified new treatment targets and are able to offer novel treatments and unique clinical trials. We also lead ground breaking studies in vitiligo, that are aiming to elucidate its cause and develop novel treatments, similar to our approach in other skin diseases. We also have one of few centers in the northeast with national and international recognition in skin allergies (contact dermatitis) and patch tests. Our cosmetic and dermatologic surgery programs are also recognized as among the best in the United States.
Among our patients, we’re known for our understanding of the daily challenges a skin condition can cause, for our willingness to hear your questions and concerns, and for our dedication to finding the right treatment plan for you.
As Chair of this distinguished Department, I am committed to putting the full strength of our program—from our talented doctors to our cutting-edge research—to work for you. The clinical care and clinical trials at Mount Sinai’s Department of Dermatology are among the very best in the United States. The Department has also led the world and the nation in the research and development of treatments for eczema, psoriasis hair loss disorders, keloids, skin cancers, as well as more rare conditions such as ichthyosis, scleroderma, and granuloma annulare to name a few. We diagnose and treat the full spectrum of skin conditions, from common to complex. Whether you’re suffering from the itch and pain of eczema, allergic skin reactions, or psoriasis, have hair loss, acne, or are noticing changes to a mole or a new skin lesions, or worrying about the effects of sun and stress, or want to rejuvenate your skin, our team is skilled in the latest technologies and most advanced and novel treatments available worldwide.
In order to support these efforts, I draw on my deep understanding of skin diseases, as a physician-scientist that successfully uses a bench-to-bedside-and-back approach to develop new drugs for the treatment of skin diseases. I also draw on my personal childhood struggles with eczema, which inspired my early interest in dermatology and to this day keep my ultimate focus on the needs of the patient.
What’s more, our team is proud to promote equality and diversity, which is vitally important to me as not only the first female Chair of a Dermatology Department in New York, but also as an immigrant.
I welcome you to look into our services, explore our clinical trials, and meet our specialists. As long as patients continue to struggle with dermatologic conditions, our Department will continue to push the boundaries of research and clinical care to develop life changing treatments.
