Transgender Surgery
As you consider your gender transition goals, Mount Sinai is here for you. We offer the highest quality affirmative health care, including transgender surgery. Our highly trained and experienced doctors develop an individualized plan to meet your needs.
In 2016, Mount Sinai became the first institution in New York City to offer genital reassignment surgery. To further provide comprehensive care for you, Mount Sinai established the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS) - one of the first programs in the United States to offer broad, multispecialty transgender care.
CTMS provides your transition-related surgeries plus primary care, endocrine, psychiatry, gynecology, urology, social work, and nursing services, as well as behavioral health care services. CTMS staff support you through each stage of your journey, from initial assessment and screening to hormonal therapy, surgery, and post-transition care, providing seamless access to outstanding affordable care.
Mount Sinai’s first surgical procedure for the transgender population was completed by Jess Ting, MD, Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Mount Sinai Health System. The procedure, a male-to-female genital reconstruction called vaginoplasty, was completed in 2016 with other procedures quickly following, including
- metoidioplasty for female-to-male genital transitions, and
- chest reconstruction surgery for transgender men and
- breast augmentation for transgender women, known as “top surgery.”
To date, the team has performed more than 400 operations, roughly seven surgeries per week. This makes Mount Sinai not only one of the first institutions in the country to offer these surgeries, but now we have one of the busiest and most experienced teams to serve you.
