Surgery
Mount Sinai Queens is committed to providing you with the highest quality of care in a reassuring, patient-centered environment. Surgical teams comprised of highly trained surgeons and anesthesiologists perform a wide range of traditional “open” as well as minimally invasive surgeries, including robotic-assisted procedures. Our surgical team employs multiple patient-centered protocols to shorten hospital stays and improve outcomes.
Our surgical team has greater capabilities than ever before with the opening of the hospital’s state-of-the-art surgical suite. Located in our new $175-million, 140,000-square-foot Mount Sinai Queens Pavilion, we now offer more extensive surgical services, including procedures previously only available at Mount Sinai locations in Manhattan. Our new operating suites include private pre-surgical rooms, a recovery room, and a large and light-filled comfortable family waiting area.
Our state-of-the-art operating rooms enable our surgeons to perform elective, emergency, and complex surgeries using the latest advances in medical technology. With the installation at Mount Sinai Queens of the da Vinci Xi robot, the most technologically advanced version of the surgical robot, we can offer you the advantages of robotic assisted surgery right here in Queens.
Our dedicated nurses, both in the operating room and at your bedside after surgery, are known for their expertise and compassion. Our staff has been awarded Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Studies have shown that Magnet hospitals provide a safer environment for patients (fewer falls, pressure ulcers, and infections), increased satisfaction, and better outcomes.
We provide comprehensive surgical care across a wide range of specialties, including breast, colon and rectal, endocrine, general, metabolic and bariatric, minimally invasive, plastic and reconstructive, surgical oncology, thoracic, urologic, and vascular. We look forward to providing you with the best possible perioperative care and making your time with us as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
Breast Surgery
Our surgeons perform a range of breast operations to treat breast cancer.
Our highly trained plastic surgeons work closely with breast surgeons and oncologists within the Mount Sinai Health System to offer a team approach to breast reconstruction.
We also perform cosmetic procedures if you wish to enhance the appearance of your breasts, including breast augmentation, reduction, and lift.
Surgical Oncology
Cancer can be a frightening diagnosis. We are here to help. Our cancer surgeons provide compassionate and expert care and see you through the process of obtaining a diagnosis, formulating a treatment plan in conjunction with other relevant specialists, undergoing surgery when needed, and receiving postoperative care, and surveillance. We treat both benign tumors and a wide array of cancers, including complex, recurrent, and multiple cancer cases. Our surgeons are experts in their fields who perform minimally invasive and open surgical procedures including esophagectomy, gastrectomy, hepatobiliary surgery such as liver and bile duct resection, pancreatic resection (Whipple procedure, distal pancreatectomy), splenectomy, adrenalectomy, colorectal resection, melanoma excision with sentinel lymph node biopsy, and sarcoma resection. When needed, we can perform specialized operations at The Mount Sinai Hospital for focused peri-operative care.
We work together with medical and radiation oncologists, interventional gastroenterologists, interventional radiologists, as well as surgical subspecialists from different fields to develop an individualized plan of treatment for you.
Colon and Rectal Surgery
If you have a benign or malignant condition of the colon, rectum, or anus that requires surgery, Mount Sinai Queens provides expert, compassionate care with an emphasis on minimally invasive procedures.
We can perform minimally invasive procedures for a variety of colon and rectal diseases and conditions, including colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, and inflammatory bowel diseases. This approach results in less post-operative pain, less scarring, and shorter post-operative hospital stays than traditional, open surgery. We can also perform surgery with our state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi robot.
In addition, our surgeons also have extensive experience with benign anorectal diseases, such as anal fissures, anal fistula, and hemorrhoids. We offer a broad range of treatments, including medical treatments, office-based procedures, and ambulatory surgical procedures.
Endocrine Surgery
Our skilled surgeons perform minimally invasive and open surgeries to treat diseases of the endocrine system, which includes the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. We use routine intraoperative nerve monitoring during thyroidectomy to help identify and protect the nerve to the voice box. We employ minimally invasive approaches whenever possible.
General and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Our expert surgical teams perform a wide range of traditional, minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic surgeries. These include abdominal surgeries such as appendix, gallbladder, hernia, esophagus, stomach, and colorectal surgeries, as well as thyroid surgery.
We can perform emergency general surgical procedures 24 hours a day, seven day a week. We are dedicated to providing you and your family with the highest quality of compassionate care before, during, and after surgery.
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
We offer metabolic and bariatric surgery, potentially lifesaving procedures that can change your life. Our innovative, multidisciplinary program treats obesity and the numerous health problems associated with it, such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea. We assess your individual situation, taking into account degree of obesity and any associated medical conditions to determine the most appropriate treatment. Often, we can use a minimally invasive approach, making for a quicker recovery and return to normal activities. In some cases, we can perform these procedures with the assistance of our medically advanced da Vinci Xi robot. The program is led by Eric D. Edwards, MD.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Our experienced surgeons are skilled at performing reconstructive surgery to restore the function and appearance of parts of the body that may have been injured as the result of surgery or an accident, including reconstruction surgery of the breast and hand. We perform plastic and reconstructive surgeries of the breast and hand.
Thoracic Surgery
Our highly trained thoracic surgeons perform a wide range of surgeries in chest organs, including lung and esophagus. Often, we perform these thoracoscopically, requiring only small incisions. Surgery for lung lesions may involve thoracoscopic removal of a piece of lung tissue containing the lesion. We might need to remove an entire lobe of the lung if you have lung cancer. Surgery for esophageal cancer includes esophagectomy, which we do using a combination of neck, chest, and abdominal incisions. We plan all cancer cases in conjunction with medical and radiation oncology, working with our multidisciplinary tumor board. Our thoracic surgeons perform surgery at both Mount Sinai Queens as well as The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. We do our best to create optimal results for our patients.
Urologic Surgery
Our skilled surgeons perform a full range of open, endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic urologic surgeries. We diagnose and treat enlarged prostate, low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, and infertility in men, as well as urological conditions that affect women such as voiding and pelvic floor dysfunction. We offer the latest laser technology for the treatment of kidney stones.
With two urologic oncologists on staff working closely with a multi-disciplinary team that includes medical and radiation oncologists, we treat prostate, kidney, bladder, testicular, and adrenal cancers. Our technologically advanced da Vinci Xi robot allows us to provide advanced robotic-assisted technology for treatment of complicated kidney stone disease and corrective surgery for urologic injuries.
At Mount Sinai Queens, we are committed to comprehensive, patient-centered care. Staff discusses the benefits and side effects associated with each treatment. When possible, we perform surgeries laparoscopically or robotically.
Vascular Surgery
Vascular surgery is part of a rapidly changing field. We offer state-of-the art imaging equipment and minimally invasive surgical techniques that have improved patient care and treatment outcomes. We treat a variety of vascular conditions including carotid artery disease, aneurysmal arterial disease, thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, mesenteric occlusive disease, tibial occlusive disease, and venous disease. We also perform procedures to provide dialysis access.
In response to the growing demand for vascular care in our community, we are staffed with two dedicated vascular surgeons. Our specialists are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to evaluate patients, manage and prescribe medications, and perform minimally invasive catheter-based endovascular procedures and open surgical reconstruction. Many of our patients present to our emergency room with undiagnosed vascular disease along with other comorbidities like heart disease or diabetes.
