Thanks to national testing and surgical advances, scoliosis is one health problem doctors largely have under control. “Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine in the frontal plane — it often looks s-shaped when you look at the person head on,” says Dr. Samuel Cho from The Mount Sinai Medical Center. “Most scoliosis curves are minor and don’t require aggressive treatment, and surgery can usually correct more severe curves before they impact surrounding organs.” About two percent of women and 0.5 percent of men have scoliosis.
