Being Depressed After A Heart Attack Or Stroke Can Be Deadly — Here’s What You Can Do About It

It's only natural to feel shaken up after a major life-threatening event like a heart attack or stroke — or to be relieved and overwhelmed that you survived. But depression can also be part of the rush of emotions people experience after health emergencies, and it can severely hinder your recovery, as two new studies point out. "People that experience these major medical problems tend to have a high rate of depression, higher than the general population, but most people with [conditions like heart attack and stroke] are not clinically depressed," says Dr. Dan Iosifescu, director of the mood disorders program and associate professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
