The Mediterranean diet, known for its cardioprotective benefits, is also associated with higher muscle mass and bone density after menopause, according to new research. The study of postmenopausal women in Brazil, presented March 19 at ENDO 2018, the Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Chicago, found higher bone and muscle mass in postmenopausal women who adhered more closely to a Mediterranean diet than those who did not. Reshmi Srinath, MD, assistant professor of medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and bone disease and the director of the weight and metabolism management program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said, that "most prior studies have focused on the role of calcium and vitamin D or the role of specific food groups in bone health so this study is unique in focusing on a single dietary pattern." She concluded that this study "adds to evidence regarding the potential benefits of the Mediterranean diet but more investigation is needed regarding which particular macronutrients are helpful in bone health."
