Advances in Orthopedics
Mount Sinai has extensive orthopedic treatment programs for both children and adults. Our exceptional specialists treat conditions ranging from disc herniation and spinal disorders to partial and full joint replacement. In addition, we help people who have tumors of the bone and soft tissue (sarcomas) and fractures of the elbow and shoulder including the rotator cuff.
Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive techniques to decrease the time it takes for recovery and rehabilitation. We make small incisions that minimize the impact to surrounding soft tissue. These technique are particularly successful for treating simple fractures, fractures that fail to heal, fractures that healed in the wrong position, and bone infections. They also work well on long bone fractures of the pelvis and the socket of the hip.
We use computer-assisted surgery technology adapted from other specialties including neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and even the NASA space program. Simulators, robots, and computer assistance enable accuracy of measurements and image-guided surgeries. These tools help with performing joint replacement for arthritis, reconstruction of fractures of bones and realignment of arms and legs, and correcting fractures. Computer-assisted techniques help us avoid affecting vital organs and nerves, which leads to faster and a more complete recovery.
We believe in educating you about your condition, whether you have a spinal disorder or are considering joint replacement surgery. We schedule one-on-one conversations for you with members of your treatment team, including your physical therapist, anesthesiologist, social worker, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner so that we can answer all of your questions.
