Patient Transfer Center
The Patient Transfer Center offers convenient and efficient transition into the care of the Mount Sinai Health System. Operational 24/7, our staff provides a streamlined referral process from an outside hospital or residence, as well as transfer within our seven member hospital campuses.
As a partner of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine, the center coordinates the transport of patients by securing appropriate bed placements and arranging for paramedics and ambulances. We ensure that new patients – as well as those already in the Mount Sinai Health System – have access to the best specialty care and the most experienced physicians and surgeons.
Critical Early Intervention
We provide transport to more than 600 patients each month. Our service understands that every moment is crucial in an emergency.
We accept pediatric patients and work closely with the Kravis Children's Hospital at Mount Sinai to ensure young patients and their families and guardians are at ease during transfer.
If you do not have a Mount Sinai physician, our highly trained transfer coordinators will identify one for you and facilitate seamless communication to ensure a safe and complete transfer of care. In emergencies, our team will immediately arrange for a phone consultation with a critical care attending physician as a bridge to the actual transfer and arrival at one of our facilities.
Rapid Response for Neurologic Emergencies
For neurologic crises, such as stroke or brain and spinal injuries, we offer a special service. Our coordinators provide instant access to a neurocritical care physician who oversees care in our Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU), stroke unit, and interventional initiatives. Trained in critical care medicine, our critical care specialists can provide life-saving advice that will help improve the patient’s outcomes and quality of life upon recovery.
Specialty Cardiac Transport Services
The paramedics who transfer critically ill patients are trained in critical care and have access to advanced cardiac support equipment that allows us to transport the most serious cardiovascular patients, including those awaiting heart transplants. We specialize in transporting patients utilizing:
- Balloon pumps
- Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
- Left ventricular assist devices
Upon transfer, our Institute has two highly specialized intensive care units for cardiac emergencies:
- The Edna and Emanuel Taub Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) which cares for patients following cardiac or thoracic surgery
- The Frida and Milton Rosenthal Coronary Care Unit (CCU), which cares for patients suffering from conditions managed non-invasively or with stents
