Dr. Lara Marcuse: “Epilepsy Often Misunderstood”

Sometimes Corey Tucci’s eyes have a distant look. He’s slow to react. His balance is uncertain. In fact, it looks like he’s been drinking. Or drugging. Neither is true. Tucci, 23, has epilepsy, where errant electrical activity in his brain causes seizures. Lara V. Marcuse, co-director of the Mount Sinai Epilepsy Center in Manhattan, is Tucci’s medical doctor and said epileptic seizures can be as subtle as a weird sensation of déjà vu or expressed as full body shaking and tongue biting, with eyes rolled back and foam at the mouth.
