"Health Screenings Should Be Mandatory To Prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest In Young Athletes" - Bill Ritter
At least four high school age students across the country have died during football practice in the past couple of months, two of them in the Tri-State area this month. There are efforts to increase health screenings of athletes to try and find any underlying health problems before kids play strenuous sports. Joe Herrera, DO, professor and system chair of rehabilitation medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said, “Sudden cardiac arrest is the number one leading cause for sudden death in our athletes, while rare, it is the leading cause at this time. When athletes start showing symptoms on the field, that’s when it’s too late.” Screening is the key in prevention, but in the United States, it is not mandatory to do EKGs for high school athletes.
