"Wheelchair Dance In Honor Of World Stroke Day" - Bowen Li
At the Mount Sinai Hospital, 14 stroke, brain, and spinal cord injury patients dance in honor of World Stroke Day. Jeanette French had a stroke and came to the Mount Sinai Hospital four years ago; dancing has changed the 68 year old woman’s attitude towards life. Collaboration plays a big role in their performance. Clarisse Quirit, a recreation therapist in the department of rehabilitation medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital said, “You just have to listen to everyone as much as possible and not freak out. If one thing wasn’t working, we just have to collaborate to bring forward different techniques.” The hospital has been running this recreational program for four years. Joseph Herrera, DO, professor and system chair of rehabilitation medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said, “The idea is basically returning our patients back to life. When you look at going back to living, that involves doing things that are recreational.”
