Community Outreach
Harlem is a medically underserved area of New York City. Not only does the new Morningside Medical Group at 147th Street meet the need for primary care and geriatric (older adult) and internal medicine, but in collaboration with Mount Sinai Morningside, it offers a full community health program that brings education and screenings directly to the community.
The community health outreach experts at Mount Sinai Morningside consult with leaders, elders, and activists on community boards, churches, schools, and senior centers to learn more about what the community wants and needs. Lectures, workshops, and screenings will be offered throughout the neighborhood. For instance, we currently have a program that provides prostate cancer screening and education on site at local barbershops.
In churches, schools, and elsewhere in the neighborhood, you will have access to programs of interest on the following topics:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Asthma
- Cancer
- HIV/AIDS
- Sexual health
- Alcohol and substance abuse
- Domestic violence
- Smoking cessation
