Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
A healthy vascular system, also called the circulatory system, is essential for overall good health. Arteries and veins circulate blood throughout the body to supply oxygen and nutrients that organs need to function properly. For many, including older people, people with diabetes, and smokers, their vascular system is compromised. This can lead to increased risk for developing a stroke, an aneurysm (a weak spot on the wall of a blood vessel characterized by bulging), carotid artery disease, varicose veins, limb loss, and even life-threatening vascular diseases.
Mount Sinai Morningside’s expert vascular and endovascular surgeons successfully treat a wide range of conditions related to blood vessels, including:
- Carotid artery disease, which can lead to stroke
- Aneurysmal arterial disease, like thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms that can lead to rupture
- Poor circulation such as in mesenteric occlusive disease
- Lower extremity arterial occlusive disease
- Venous disease
Our surgeons perform life-saving and limb-saving surgery and advanced minimally invasive treatment of leg pain and leg ulcers, in addition to procedures for dialysis access. They work with our team of amputation prevention and limb salvage specialists for the best possible outcomes.
More than 55 percent of vascular surgeries are minimally invasive, using smaller incisions and requiring less recovery time than open surgery. Patients typically go home the same day, or if a hospital stay is required, it’s usually overnight.
Our board certified, fellowship-trained doctors offer compassionate, personalized care that is unique to every individual. When possible, patients are treated medically without any intervention or surgery.
Why Mount Sinai Morningside?
Our state-of-the-art hybrid operating room, featuring the latest technologically advanced equipment, allows our team of surgeons, radiologists, and other specialists to perform a wide range of simple and complex procedures. With access to the most advanced digital imaging, including PET scanners, high resolution CT and fusion imaging, real-time images of blood vessels can be created to diagnose and repair damaged arteries and veins.
These highly sensitive digital imaging devices emit low radiation, making them powerful, but safe, for patients. They are among the most sophisticated in the tristate area and provide a magnified, 3D view of veins and arteries, allowing physicians to precisely target their procedures and safely implant devices within a half millimeter. The combination of detailed imaging, advanced operating room technology, and skilled medical experts provides the best likelihood for successful treatment and recovery.
Eligible patients have the opportunity to enroll in clinical trials of emerging procedures, devices, therapies, and medications conducted by Mount Sinai Morningside doctors to advance treatment of vascular conditions. Participants in clinical trials have access to the latest techniques and medications and receive care from the top doctors in the field who maintain the highest levels of patient safety.

What We Offer
The Mount Sinai Morningside surgery experts offer an array of innovative services and equipment for effective vascular and endovascular diagnosis and treatment.
State-of-the-Art Hybrid Operating Room
The latest advanced technology for the best possible outcomes
Mount Sinai Morningside offers the latest high-tech equipment to diagnose and treat a wide range of vascular conditions with extremely complex procedures. Our new hybrid operating room is home to digital imaging equipment that captures magnified details of up to a millimeter inside the human body at very low radiation levels, making it very safe for patients. Expert vascular surgeons work closely with experienced interventional radiologists to perform procedures requiring precision, such as implanting medical devices, and other minimally invasive procedures that previously required surgical incisions.
Amputation Prevention
Advanced procedures save limbs and save lives
The vascular surgeons at Mount Sinai Morningside are experts at successfully performing limb-saving procedures for patients with necrotic arms or legs due to diabetes, poor blood flow, serious infection, or other reasons. They use sophisticated techniques such as radical debridement to remove dead or infected tissue to enable healthy new tissue to grow and reduce the risk of blood infection. Revascularization uses catheters, guidewire, and balloons to open up the blood vessels and increase blood flow to the affected limb, reducing the need for amputation.
Aortic Care
Repairing aortic aneurysms with outstanding results and low complication rates
A weak spot in a blood vessel can lead to the formation of a balloon-shaped aneurysm that can rupture and cause life-threatening internal bleeding. To prevent this from occurring, our skilled endovascular surgeons may insert a thin tube (catheter) through an artery in a patient’s leg up through the aorta to place a graft to reinforce the weakened section. Alternatively, open surgery maybe be performed to remove the damaged section of the blood vessel and replace it with a graft.
Treatment of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)
Advanced minimally invasive treatment of leg pain and leg ulcers
Peripheral artery disease is a circulatory issue that causes a narrowing of the arteries in the leg. This can cause leg pain and leg ulcers and limit a person’s ability to walk and, in advanced cases, can lead to gangrene and amputation. The skilled vascular surgeons at Mount Sinai Morningside perform minimally invasive angioplasty and stenting to open a blocked artery or, in some cases, surgery to reroute the blood flow around a blocked artery to restore blood flow.
Carotid Stenosis
Removing plaque build-up in neck arteries
When arteries in the neck (carotids) become blocked by plaque build-up, it can reduce blood flow to the brain and increase the likelihood of stroke. Our vascular surgeons perform a simple, minimally invasive procedure to remove plaque in the carotid arteries through a small incision that can lower the risk of stroke down to normal. They may also use a stent to enlarge the narrowed section with wire-mesh stents and high-pressure balloons.
Advanced Screening for Vascular Disease
Detecting vascular diseases, including abdominal aortic aneurysms, so they can be treated early
Early detection of vascular conditions can reduce the risk of life-threatening or life-changing acute or chronic medical problems. Our state-of-the-art equipment, including multidetector CT and digital imaging, is able to detect even minor abnormalities using very low, safe levels of radiation. These advanced screenings, read by an experienced team of vascular specialists, identify abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral artery disease, carotid stenosis, and vein disease so they can be treated before they cause significant harm to health.
