Our Services
Quick and accurate imaging scans help doctors make accurate diagnoses. At Mount Sinai Morningside, we offer a wide range of radiology services. We also provide radiology treatments for various conditions. Our services include the following:
Body Imaging
We use computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonography, radiography, and fluoroscopy to explore the abdomen and pelvis. We also perform diagnostic and therapeutic image-guided drainages and biopsies. Our radiologists do and interpret tests of the liver, biliary system, colon, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, female pelvis, and prostate. We also do non-invasive CT and MR vascular examinations.
Diagnosis
Bone Densitometry
When your bones become thinner and more fragile, you are at greater risk of fracture (osteoporosis). This condition usually affects post-menopausal woman, but can also happen to men and even children. We test bone densitometry with an imaging test called dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DEXA.
Breast Imaging
The earlier you get diagnosed with breast cancer, the better the chances of successful treatment. To keep you healthy, we offer a full range of diagnostic procedures. Our breast imagers interpret routine and diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, MRI, and breast specific gamma imaging. We also perform stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI-guided core biopsies, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration, needle localizations, and axillary sentinel node biopsies. We work closely with internists, gynecologists, breast surgeons, pathologists, and oncologists to provide the best possible care.
Cardiothoracic Imaging
Thoracic imaging helps diagnose diseases of the lungs and surrounding tissues. This includes lung cancer screening and malignancy, airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, infection, and vascular diseases of the aorta and pulmonary arteries. We perform high-resolution chest CT, CT angiography of the aorta and pulmonary arteries, and conventional chest radiography.
Cardiac imaging focuses on the heart. We also use CT and MRI imaging in this specialty. CT imaging includes coronary artery calcium scoring, as well as coronary CT angiography, to assess for coronary artery atherosclerosis. We use cardiac MRI to determine cardiac viability prior to revascularization, to assess for the presence of infiltrative myocardial disease, and to evaluate congenital cardiac anatomy. We also use MRI to evaluate the aorta.
Emergency Radiology
We cover the emergency department 24/7 to help patients who are acutely ill and traumatized. We use including multi-detector CT, MRI, ultrasound and X-ray technologies.
Musculoskeletal Imaging
We use our knowledge of patients and our technological expertise to perform advanced musculoskeletal imaging. We perform a wide range of imaging scans and therapies for bones, joints, and soft tissue. We do tests ranging from ultrasound to MR arthrography, as well as therapeutic injections. Our Interventional Radiology section performs bone biopsies. We work closely with experts in orthopedics, rheumatology, and rehabilitation medicine. This helps us provide the best possible diagnosis—which leads to the best possible treatment plan.
Neuroradiology
The neuroradiology section interprets MRI and CT scans of the brain, head, neck, and spine. We look for degenerative, traumatic, neoplastic, vascular and congenital diseases, facilitating accurate diagnoses. The information we provide helps your doctor set the best possible treatment plan.
Nuclear Medicine Imaging
Nuclear medicine, also called scintigraphy, uses small amounts of radioactive materials (radiotracers) to help diagnose a variety of diseases. It helps us assess how well your organ, tissue, or bone is functioning. The tests are safe and painless. To perform a nuclear medicine test, we give you a small amount of radioactive material by injection, swallowing, or inhaling. We have found that there is a specific tracer for each organ or tissue. Then we use a special camera, called a Gamma camera, to take pictures of the inside of your body. We use nuclear medicine to diagnose disorders such as bone infections, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, cancer, thyroid disorders, neurologic diseases, and gastrointestinal disease.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging or sonography uses high frequency sound waves to create pictures of internal organs and soft tissue. These include the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys and bladder. Ultrasounds can help us examine a fetus in the uterus, study blood flow through veins and arteries, and diagnose gallstones and prostate abnormalities. We use specialized musculoskeletal sonography to evaluate how tendons work while joints are in motion. Since ultrasound uses sound waves rather than X-rays to view internal anatomy, you are exposed to radiation. We often use ultrasounds, for this reason, when we take images of children.
Treatments
Interventional Radiology
We can use radiology to treat conditions, as well as diagnose them. This approach works particularly well for liver disease, uterine fibroid embolization, deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, end state renal disease/hemodialysis care, kidney cancer, peripheral arterial disease, and vascular anomalies and malformations. We offer these services throughout the Mount Sinai Health System.
Nuclear Medicine (NM)
Nuclear medicine treats disease by using small amounts of radioactive materials, called radiotracers. We treat a variety of conditions in this way, including hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. There are no known side effects of nuclear medicine.
