Our Services

Radiology at The Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Radiology performs state-of-the-art imaging services in a warm and friendly environment. We emphasize early diagnosis, to find disease when it is most treatable. Our experts offer the following diagnostic tests for patients of all ages:

• Computed tomography (CT): This high-resolution scan combines a series of X-ray images to provide detailed information about the size, shape, and position of your internal organs. CT scans are especially helpful with problems of the brain, spinal cord, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It does not use any radiation. We use ultrasound most often to look for blood clots, though it has other uses as well.
• Ultrasound: Using high-frequency sound waves, ultrasound lets us observe your internal organs.
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): This procedure uses a large magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images of your internal organs. It works without radiation and is especially helpful in exploring bones and soft tissue.

We also perform these imaging tests for the emergency department, a 24/7 service. This helps emergency department doctors make accurate diagnoses.

Treatment

At The Mount Sinai Hospital, we use Interventional radiology to treat certain conditions. We use guidance from imaging scans, we are able to diagnose and treat disease. This is a key component of minimally invasive procedures. We use this approach to treat stroke, blood clots, and many types of cancers.

We also use nuclear medicine to treat cancer and other conditions. To do this, we administer radioactive material directly into your body. Radiotherapy then destroys cancer cells and shrinks tumors. Normal cells may be damaged by this approach, but they can repair themselves. Cancer cells cannot.

Research

The Mount Sinai Hospital is heavily involved in imaging research and development. We are particularly involved in using radiological approaches for treatment of several types of cancer.
